Thought this would be an interesting topic that many other beginners would find helpful when trying to decide what to put in their newly cycled 10g tank.

What fish would you choose to put in a 10g tank, how many and why would you select those fish?

My opinion, based on some research: Single species of Mickey Mouse Platy. Because they are fascinating to look at, and I understand that platy's are hardy, easy maintenance fish. I would put a school of them (6) in the 10g tank with lots live plants such as Java Fern and Java Moss.

It's been years since I raised sword tails, but back they they were somewhat aggressive. Have you ever thought about Endler Guppies? Small fish are good for small aquariums, and wild populations of Endlers are in danger of becoming extinct. Of course, fancy guppies are also good for a small aquarium. Some of the smaller Gouramis do OK in a smaller aquarium, because they can breathe air. I also like White Cloud Mountain Minnows. Smaller aquariums like a ten gallon need more careful maintenance than larger fish tanks, and you need to be very careful to avoid over feeding or over crowding.

What a good idea for a topic! So many people start out with a ten gallon tank and are not sure what to put in it. I would plant it pretty heavily. For fish I would have three cory catfish and maybe a few female bettas or some guppies. Female bettas can be pretty colorful these days and are more likely to get along than males. Of course, if I tried that I would keep something else handy in case they did not like each other. I also like the idea of a small school of some sort of tetra instead. Maybe five or so. I really like head and tail light tetras, neons, and glo light. Not those dyed glo fish. These are natural.

Absolutely, the more the merrier when it comes to tetras! You just have to have room for them.

Perhaps a picture to go by might generate a thought or two on planting amounts in small tanks as well as fish thoughts.

FYI-My 10g is cycled, I think, since the Nitrites are 0, the Ammonia is 0 and the Nitrates are about 30. I am pretty sure moving the 29g's hanging filter immediately over to the 10g for its filtering system may have kickstarted things since I just got that tank last week and all the readings appear to be in the cycled stage even though they have been all over the place up until now.

BTW - if this is in the wrong forum, please let me know, I am still learning all of this.

This is certainly a good place to post it
Do you have any fish on your tank?
Having plants without fish on a new tank (a week to two) will definitely show no ammonia or nitrites, but it would spike once you add the first fish.
The reason is that ammonia, and later on nitrites and nitrates are created from biological waste.
Fish create it on a daily basis...
Plants are creating it when they start decaying, and on a much slower rate then fish (depends on the quantities of each of course, but for aquariums it's usually right).
In addition plants are also using nitrogen elements as nutrition, so the little nitrogen elements created by some can easily be consumed by others.
In such a case you have a "mini-cycle".

BTW, I love black neons, but the regular neon tetras or cardinals could do great on such a tank.
