Hi I'm helping a friend of mine set up his new 40 gallon tank… and we've gotten to the fish planning stage. He's after a peaceful, colorfull tank. Here's what he was thinking… Black Neon Tetras (6) Cardinal Tetras (6) Gold Tetras (6) German Blue Rams (3) - is 3 a bad number? Would 4 be better? Or 2? Ghostshrimp (15) - is that an ok number for a 40g tank?? More?? Less?? Wouldn't turn into lunch for the rams would they?

I'm not sure though… I don't have any experience with a tank this big or with any of those fish other than the neons. His water is pretty neutral… maybe a tiiiny bit acidic. Probably in the 6.5-7 range. His water is soft, though I'm not sure how soft exactly. I know his house has a water softener.

He's also after some plants. Here's what he's thinking: Dwarf hairgrass Afzeli Anubias

Nothing much really… I think he'll offset those with some plastic/silk ones as well.

So yeah… that's it. Is he crazy? Is it a good combo? What do you think? If we're overstocking or understocking please help adjust the numbers.

Thanks a lot for your help.. it really is appreciated.

Looks ok to me, but I personally would not have as many ghost shrimp and get a few cory catfish. You have cycled the tank already, correct? If not, your fish will start dying one by one in just a couple weeks.

Have fun with it.
