[snip]

I have the same tank, often used as a quarantine tank. You might consider a couple of otocinclus, which would keep the algae under control. And maybe another cory cat to keep the first company. Your male Betta will provide plenty of color; the others tend to be dull. But I'm in favor of 'cleanup fish' that end up having their own charms. E.g., you can spend a lot of meditative time just trying to find the otos!

Also, not to dissuade you from a male Betta, but have you considered a female Betta or two? They're just as colorful albeit with shorter fins, and are peaceful (I have two or more together in other tanks). You could have 2 of different colors to provide more interest.

I said > > guppies, 1 male, 3 females... that'll keep you busy.... heee heee...

should read, 'get guppies, 1 male, 3 females... that'll keep you busy.... heee heee...'

Do not get guppies!! You will end up with way to many to fit your tank after a year!! they breed like no other and you will never want another fish for at leased a couple of years. Mortician2005 was right about them keeping you busy but she means really busy lol.. enless you just get a male they are pretty and they can't breed themself haha.

You could try a couple of paradise fish, but a five gallon tank is too small for most other aquarium fish. In addition, it's difficult to maintain because of it's small size and resultant lack of tolerance for mistakes.

you could try a couple of feeder fish (goldfish). The tank is a technically a little small if they grow large but they wont outgrow the tank. I figure you are keeping them from being eaten by other fish so who cares haha.

Good idea! Goldfish also tolerate less than ideal aquarium conditions.
