not really, unless there is a critter that would be hell bent on breaking it. A metal heater, even SS, is going to corrode...thats why the vast majority are glass. I have never had a heater break on me in about 30 years. I have had many break down...

At the higher wattages, like a 300, its a bit intense... I think I would use 2. The wattage is your choice.....150s or so would do it.

I would choose Ebo Jager heaters if you could get them. They make various wattages and lengths. I use (2) 250 watt heaters in my 150 gallon tank. I forget the actual length, but they are very long. I have about a dozen Ebo's and have not had a failure so far. I have had failures in all other brands I have bought the last 30 years....

Not unless your going to have large cichlids.

The temp. in large tanks don't fluctuate like smaller tanks that would need 4 watts per gal. I have two 90 gal. tanks - the substrate, rocks, and driftwood take the space of about 15 gals. in each tank. 2 watts per gal. is all that's needed with larger tanks - I use two 150 watt heaters on the 90s - the second heater is only a back-up and isn't needed if you buy a good heater.

Hard to beat an Ebo Jager........Frank

Hagan solid-state 'tronics' are superior...I suggest them.
