Ok Well Ive had this mini fish tank on my desk,
Ive had the same fish and snail for.... about 3-4 months now.
However about the beginning of last month the snail just stop suctioning to the walls and sat on the ground, day and night 24/7. I heard snails can sleep for months or hibernate. Well today it just randomly turned upside down and floated to the top...
As for the type of snail... I THINK its a black mystery snail. The water is still clear... The Fish is happy.... Everything but the snail. I have actually taken it out with a net and just kinda tapped it to see it would react... It didnt.
So question... is Leopold dead? (The Snail.)
Good question. I've noticed when my mystery snails died, they didn't float up to the top of the tank like yours did. I'd leave him in the tank in a certain spot and see if his position changes periodically.
I wish I could say more.
How big is the tank? What kind of fish? What are your water parameters? Do you have copper in your water? What is your water changing schedule? Do you feed the snail?
Try holding the snail in your hand, and see if he will open up. If not, give it a sniff, you'll know if it's dead.
Uhmm Well im using a like... 10gallon tank from petco... Its that weird dentist office hexagonal shape. Water changing? Uhh I have not really done it yet. The water is crystal clear and I have a fantail gold fish I believe he is.
He has been floating at the top at the same spot for now... And... I dont really wanna smell him... xD
u have to do water changes every week. my snails didnt float when they died eather altho my snails did float when they where little cause they would go to the surface and get air under there shell but they never floated that long every time i seen them flowtin witch was only like 2 times i turned them upside down in the water and sure enufe bubbles came outa there shell. how also my snails quit moving around in the water is it is really cold. and iv noticet that is the snail is small goldfish do pic on them. o ya a gold fish r very messy fish. the water may look crystall clear but that deosint mean it is good for fish. goldfish do get very big a 10 gallon is not big enuf for a fancy goldfish as u said it mite be. but for a fancy goldfish a 20 to 25 gallon should do nicely. if its a commet goldfish u mite need a 30 gallon so they can swimm and turn around and so on. but if ur fish is still small dont worry about the size of tank for a bit.
My snail will sit ont he bottom looking dead for days. Ive almost ptched it a couple of times..but didnt..which is good because he/she is still kickin.
I have noticed that after a longer nap it always has new growth on it's shell. I have had the same snail for over a year now.
I dont think you need to worry personally..my snail also occaisionally will float fow awhile too...but it always suctions back on later. like a couple of days later.
Even if snail smelling is not your favorite form of recreation, it's a virtual certainty that you will smell the snail when he is diseased.
Sniff test for snails is the only way to go. Sad truth.
In order to find out if its dead or not sniff it. My grandmas snail floated to the top and we just pushed him back under, he was just caught with an air bubble. But in order to tell if their dead or not sniff. You don't even have to get to close, the smell is like that of a rotten egg.
Agreed, did the same with a golden mystery snail I had gotten from a friend, I almost passed out from the ungodly stench of that thing.
When I was little, I went to a lake. The lake had a snail at the edge of the water. I asked my grand mom if I could keep it ( you know how little kids are ) until I realized what smell the thing had. The snail then hung out of the shell and I threw that thing as far as I could into that lake, LOL. Just thought I should share this story.
ewwww thats awesome.
I agree with what everyone is saying. Just because he's floating, doesn't mean he's dead. You have to make yourself do the sniff test. Trust me, you'll know.
If you really don't want to smell it, lightly tug on it's trapdoor. If alive, it should show resistance. If dead, it should flop out. And stink, really bad.
I have one that has alighter shade o shell in front too.Looks weaker. I smelled him but he just smell like.....how bad does it really smell Thanks
A live snail smells like tank water fishy. A dead snail smells like gag me I may become ill very quickly.
Thanks we are not there yet. Tank water is more like it.
If u care about it so much u should smell it
I have had my snail, Buc, for about a month. He has been so active. He never stops. This morning I found him on the bottom just laying there, kind of a little out of his shell. I went to work and when I came home I checked on him and he had not moved. I picked him up and I'm pretty sure he moved a little so I put him back in the tank.
I'm hoping he's just sleeping He's really a cool little guy.
Mystery snails sometimes withdraw into their shells and become inactive for a day or two. They also need lots of calcium in their diet, and here is how to provide it:
I've had snails for a few years now. Sometimes they're active and sometimes they're not! Warmer the water, the more active they are; cooler water they slow down.
Are you checking the water parameters/conditions, as to ammonia etc. Also ph. They need good clean water just like fish.
It takes them a while to smell after they die, so you can put him to your nose everyday if he's still not moving. But measure the water for toxins. API freshwater kit is the best.
Thank you for all the advice. I just did the smell test. No bad smell.
Yay i hope he stays alive!
Now taste it
So sad mine not dead but on dided today here a picture of mine😩✌🏿
