Hello, I have a Fluval 403 that has been quite noisy from the day I owned it. I am thiking about replacing it with something quieter but I wanted to try adding a Pentair 1200 (270 gph) or 3000 (700 gph) to the water inlet or oulet line thus bypassing the internal fluval pump. Has anyone tried this? Any success. Would the 700 gph pump be too powerful for the system? My fish seek out the out flow pipe of the fluval to swim against the current. If the 700 gph was too powerful I could reduce the output of the pump using a Variac. This configuration seems it would allow me to move the Fluval from below the tank (off the floor) to the same level as the tank. Any advantage to placing the pump before (push) or after (pull) the filter? Any thoughts would be welcomed.

Pump before the filter (push), works better.
If the flow rate is too high, use a valve on the pump discharge to throttle the flow. It's cheap, easy, and it won't hurt the pump.
I've actually been thinking about doing this to one of my clanky old Fluvals. I'd be curious to know how it works out for you.
