As a general rule, each mature angelfish needs at least ten gallons of aquarium. Because of their size,though, a ten gallon tank is too small for even one mature angelfish. In aquarium shops, you may see lots of juvenile angelfish in a relatively small tank, but that doesn't work for adults. It usually takes about a year for an angelfish to mature. That's when they become territorial and aggressive; the next step is spawning behavior, which can be downright violent. A spawning pair of angelfish needs their own aquarium (I like a 37 tall.), and their fry also need their own aquarium. Angelfish require a few special water parameters, so they're not a starter fish or even a good member of a community tank.

After all that, angelfish are popular, because they are an exotic and beautiful species with interesting, individual personalities. Watching them spawn and care for their fry is fascinating, but it's nothing to be undertaken without preparation.
