A couple of friends of mine just gave me a 55 gallon tank that they assumed could no longer hold water because the 'bar' that went across the center (to stabilize, I assume) broke off. I received the tank because I keep reptiles, but I've been more and more interested in fish.

So, I guess my question is this: is there any way I could repair this tank, or would I be better off just buying a new one? If that's the case, where can I get one for a reasonable price?

you can generally buy the trim through your LFS (local fish store), as they can usually get it from the manufacturer/distributor...here's the 2 pitures of this trim which help you to repair your tank...

You can use aquarium sealant as shown in the pictures and make sure you do a water leak test first. As for buying a new one, you can find many used ones for sale at garage sales and etc. Used tanks aren't necessarily a bad thing and most used tanks are in good condition.

Phoenix has lots of yard sales, and used aquariums are very cheap.

I'll check into prices for a new trim, but I'm thinking perhaps just buying a used tank might be cheaper. I wish I could get one for super cheap, but unlike Phoenix, Ohio only has a month or two where yard sales are a viable option
