Hello everyone, a hopeless newbie needs help!
As background info, my brother brought these home from a fair 2 days ago, so I was forced to set up the tank (30 litres/6.6 gallons) uncycled. I also had no filter cartriges, gravel, planting or water testing kit and won't for several days (shops closed).
Both goldfish had slight scale damage but were other wise healthy. The water became cloudy within a day (which is faster than I have ever known) and I got worried when they started going to the top of the tank to breathe, so did a full water change (thinking perhaps there were traces of something in the tank). However when I woke up this morning, I found them breathing rapidly and still going to the top to breathe, despite the water looking clear. Their fins are clamped and one of them seems to have more scale damage than yesterday.
The temperature is correct and I added chlorine control and stress treatment/bacteria culture to any water I replaced. Any input would be appreciated, thanks in advance.
Sorry for the essay

a very warm welcome here ...hm u need filtration there.the water becomecs cloudy as u say bcoz of this lack of filtration.the gold fishes go top of the tank bcoz they don't get oxygen so u need a air pump that delivers oxygen supply.these 2 are the major criteria that u have to do 1st.
then u may go for plants..and don't cycle 100 % of this water bcoz it can hurts fish. they may die bcoz of that.after a week u may change 20 % water change that's max but not more tna that.
wish u a good luck..

Hi and welcome. Yes, your fish are very stressed. I understand you had an emergency situation with the fish and had to get something for them to live in pretty fast. Goldfish actually require a minimum of ten gallons each and are very messy fish. Your 6.6 gallon tank will hopefully only be a temporary home. It is extremely difficult to keep water parameters stable in a tank less than ten gallons. Goldfish are pretty tough and are often used to cycle a tank because most of them can survive the conditions a tank goes through as the good bacteria establishes itself. The cloudiness is likely due to a bacteria bloom, possibly from fish waste. Changing all of the water will only prolong the problem because you are removing any established bacteria. Especially if you are wiping the bowl. I would add a small amount of gravel for them to live in. Also, as helinova already suggested, an air stone is a must. You can filter a tank by changing 20 or so percent of the water, but I like to use some sort of mechanical filtration like a hang on back filter that is always working for me. Plus bacteria will colonize the filter and add to the biological filtration. I hope this helps. Best of luck with your new fishes. Please keep us updated.

Since I last posted I've installed the filter and have used oxygenating tablets instead of an airstone (it was just too expensive to buy one, I'm a high school kid so £25 is quite a lot). It was great at first and they really seemed to have perked up, literally zooming round the tank, I noticed the filter was buffeting them a little but thought it would die down.
But when I checked on them a couple of hours later, the weaker fish that came to me with a damaged fin was really struggling to control its movement and was resting quite a lot near the top of the tank.
I don't understand why the filter is creating such a current because it came with the tank. I've turned it off for now, I don't want them to die from exhaustion

pls don't do that.u hv to use airstone rather than oxygen tablets. and u said that the filter u bought produce a lots of current, that means that u buy a power filter bcoz the power filter or biological filter cause current.the purpose of those filters are they produce bacteial colony and give the full circulation of water in ur tank that's why it produces current.

What kind of filter is it? Some have a control, which should be set to slow. So long as bubbles are breaking the surface of the water, the tank will have plenty of dissolved oxygen.

it is the undergravel filter, the purpose is that is not only produce oxygen bubble but also store the wastage at its bottom.

All of my aquariums have under gravel filters. They work fine if you keep up with the partial water changes, and they cost much less than the built in types. Since under gravel filters require only a small air pump, you can adjust the output by installing a bleed valve between the pump and check valve.
