I see pictures and read posts all the time from people who have bettas who 'flare' all the time. Mine hasn't done so once. I test his water regularly, he eats/poops just fine, and seems rather healthy. Is it okay that he never flares? Does that even matter at all?

Try putting a small mirror in front of the glass so your Betta can see itself, that makes it think there is another betta, and gives it the instinct to flare, (or take its fighting stance) that's what I do to see mine flare, mine also flares at his own reflection from the side of the aquarium.

Of course if you have already tried this, maybe yours just doesn't feel threatened... which could be a good thing.

It doesn't matter if he flares as I think flaring too much is stressful. Also if you want him to flare to make it seem like he is in his natural habitat, you could place a mirror as suggested so he can defend his "turf". Flaring is unnecessary to a betta's health though.

Between episodes of not flaring, you may want to test the water for the presence of ammonia or nitrite. Those two things will make a fish sick and thus not interested in eating, flaring or much of anything.

I've actually been checking the water regularly. Everything is exactly where it's supposed to be. I tried the mirror thing. He shook his fins a little and kind of stared at his reflection for a few seconds, then just went about business as usual.

My Betta doesn't seem to like to flare either - usually only stopping briefly at his reflection, then slowly slinking away. Because he had a damaged bottom fin when I got him (as a gift), I wondered whether he had been injured before by another Betta at the pet store or something, and thus prefers to avoid confrontation?

Or maybe he is just a peaceful Betta. He seems pretty happy otherwise.
