Hi!
Do black lights do anything (good) for your tank ?
also - anyone know a good source for 4 foot tubes?

The effects are fairly minimal from everything I've read. Some people like them as a night time light source - I'm indifferent. It might look cool over corals or live rock, but I doubt many people will have tried that.
4 foot tubes are available at most big hardware stores - Home Depot has them around here for a decent price.
One caveat - my 15' 'play' blacklight gets quite hot when it's on.

I've tried them over coral, the effect can be very startling but if they are the type of black light that gives off too much UVB they can have a bad effect on the heath of the coral. some brands of Black lights give off more UVB than others. There has been some talk that black lights cause coral to be more colorful due the UV blocking pigments that grow in the coral more under black light but they can also burn coral as well. I've not noticed any difference in freshwater at all. I'm not sure if freshwater fish can even see black light or even the deep violet light given off by the bulbs.
