I was just curious - has anyone used or heard of using blasting sand as a substrate? There is a product called Black Beauty Sand blasting media. It is mainly used in sand blasters and as grit on top of houses. I know that it is made of coal slag but was wondering if that is even safe for the fish. The LFS is selling it as substrate for really cheap.

Yes, i have heard of using blasting sand (for the black color) before though i have no personal experience with it. I do know it comes in grades from fine to coarse & needs to be VERY, VERY well washed before using. A coarse grade is preferable to prevent water cloudiness & make cleaning easier.
