I've got a Platy that I've had for about a year. Recently he started sitting on the bottom of the tank and not moving. At feeding time he would swim up and eat, but otherwise seemed very listless.

I took him out and put him into a hospital tank and observed him closely. I noticed that his eyes have gone a kind of pale milky colour, and when he swims him often bumps into objects. Basically I think he has gone blind.

Other than that, he actually seems quite healthy, and he does eat though he seems to have trouble finding the food on the surface.

Any ideas or suggestions?

I'll leave this to the more experienced in the group, but my readings indicate that it's possibly a bacterial infection.

Yep. Try acriflavine or Melafix in your hospital tank.

I agree with Oz and Elaine - cloudy eyes, it's called Corneal Opacity, a bacterial infection due to poor water quality. See if you can find a medication called Eye Fungex by Aquatronics - works quick. Otherwise try something like Kanamycin or Maracyn Two - something that won't wipe out your bio-filter........ Frank

Please do. I've read about Indian almond leaves, but not tried them yet. Melafix and Pimafix seem to be marketed backwards to me. In human healthcare, tea tree oil is a fantastic antifungal, and Pimenta racemosa (bay rum) oil is disinfectant and antibacterial, although rather sensitizing. Based on my human aromatherapy training I'd be more inclined to use Melafix for fungus and Pimafix for bacteria. *grin*

I started keeping fish a little over 40 years ago, if I'm remembering right. That's about the time tetracycline started breeding resistant bugs to fish disease. I beleave due to 2 and 3 day tank treatments to kill BGA (buleish green slime algae). 10 years later the resistants was pretty well wide spread here in the US... Antibiotics, like any other medication, can do more harm than good if improperly used.........Frank
