Probably the frog is too active for a Betta. Those large, colorful fins are the result of much selective breeding, so male Bettas are not able to cope very well.

Fish never seem to be happy in those breeding traps. Guppies are not bad about eating their fry if you provide plenty of floating plants.

Many times in breeding Angels... If you're after a specific look... you may breed siblings... Or even offspring to the parents.

I think peat is used for breeding some species of killifish. Maybe you can find where killifish breeders get theirs from...
