My baby molly is about the size of a bean, and I bought him a big filter called the Quiet flow 10. it is large and it has a noisy motor. I wonder if my molly will get stuck... so please help me figure it out.
Thanks for visiting.
Small fish can and do get trapped in powerful filters. One solution is to put a nylon mesh over the filter intake. If you get the nylon from an old pair of hose, be sure to rinse it well so it has no soap residue. A second solution is to use only a sponge filter with a fairly large surface area. A sponge filter needs a small air pump, so it's easy to adjust the flow rate.
What exactly is a sponge filter? I have heard lots about them, but have neer seen one or found out how they work. I have been thinking about switching to one. How many gallons can they filter effectively?
this is it...
Sponge filters also have an air tube that connects to a pump. They are far from being the end all filter, but they're great in special circumstances like raising fry. Some of us keep one running all the time, because they house beneficial bacteria and can be used to rapidly cycle a small aquarium. Aquarium shops don't always sell them, but they're available in many stiles on line. Angelsplus.com has a nice selection, as do drsfostersmith.com.
