can fish hear? they seem to know when someone is pounding on the tank, but I don't think I see any ears.

I don't know if they hear, or rather feel vibrations. But I make sure and put a folded towel on the side of one of my tanks when the TV is on, so they don't get stressed by the sound. Also, my bettas HATE bubble wands, which might be just a dislike of the vibration. I do know that halibut have ears, they are made out of pure ivory. So I would assume all fish have some sort of hearing.

Fish have a lateral line that functions much like the little hair things which vibrate deep in your ear and send digital signals to your brain. I'm not sure how a fish brain interprets those signals, but they can detect sounds and movements. And by the way, please don't bang on the aquarium.

I don't know if they can hear but they can feel vibrations of moving things which is in a way like hearing.
