hm light plays a more important tank if aquarium is planted, then your plants need light, and then it is a well deciding factor for the growth of your plants..but if you have light they it switches on in the evening...

The ancestors of most aquarium fish are from the tropics, which get about 12 hours of sunshine every day. That's a good place to start. Most of the fish you buy for your aquarium were raised in aquariums or outdoor ponds for many generations, so hours of light are not very important. Like helinova said, hours of light are more important to plant growth. Frequently I get lazy and forget to turn off the aquarium lights at night. The fish don't seem to care. Many aquarists, in fact, use a night light in the fish room.
