Many aquarium shops will do free water tests, but they will now and then try to sell you water chemistry treatments. Many of the so called fixes will work under just the right conditions, but even when they do they are usually just masking the real problem. Good aquarium maintenance, including regular partial water changes, will help you avoid most problems. Have you checked out any of the on-line aquarium supply stores? Although they charge shipping, there is usually no tax, and the prices are low. They sell all sorts of water test kits, and the inexpensive ones work OK for most of us.
