Welcome to our forum. I believe they put some extra chemicals in play sand. It's not dangerous to the kids, but it may be no good for aquarium use. Sometimes, the sand bag lists the contents. Also, if you put some vinegar on the sand, you can tell if it's reactive. If you're not sure, it's best to err on the side of caution.

I considered using play sand as a substrate once and decided in favor of pool filter sand due to the messiness. Pool filter sand is still pretty messy, but it will settle down after about 24 hours. I hadn't heard about play sand changing water parameters and some people have used it. However, as John said, it is best to err on the side of caution.
