I've just been reading some of the different questions and comments that people have submitted, and now I have a question that is not directly fish related, but rather website related.
How is it determined whether you are a "fresh boarder", or "expert boarder" ?
While I certainly would not consider myself an expert (is anyone REALLY an expert?) ... I certainly don't think of myself an just starting out or beginner. I keep several Puffer fish and also Mudskippers, and neither of those are fish that just anyone can keep, and keep alive and well.
I have just read a question by someone who admitted they were new at fishkeeping and new on this website, yet I was surprised to see that they have "expert boarder" under their name.
It doesn't affect me what is under my name, but it's just one of those things that I'm curious about. How do you progress to get futher than a fresh boarder?

That is how it is figured.

How many posts you have.

Keep participating as you have and you'll be an expert boarder on our website in no time!

We love people to join such as you. People that have a lot of experience with certain species.

Both species you have mentioned are very interesting, and I'm sure you'll get some questions about them!

Yeah that's cool, as I said, it doesn't really matter what is under my name, I know what experience I have and don't need to be shouting it to everyone.
It just seemed kind of odd that someone who has no experience with fish, is considered an "expert" on a fish forum site.
But never mind, it's all good!

A website like this works only when we participate, so participation is a sensible way to measure things. As for the names assigned to different levels of participation, I suppose they were chosen to encourage more participation. Certainly they have nothing to do with skill level or experience. Even people with 50 years in the hobby start as fresh boarders. And we moderators are sometimes immoderate, especially when it comes from having a house full of aquariums. It's just a personal opinion, but this website is more about sharing experiences and helping each other than it is about being an expert. In fact, when a person gets to be an expert, they lose the ability to learn. Please feel free to offer opposing opinions on anything you see here. We're all just learning, and we appreciate help along the way.
