Sorry if this is repeated - my news reader seems to be playing up.

I have a 50 gal well planted tank. Water levels are consistently 0 ammonia, 0 Nitrite, , PH 7 although nitrates sometimes go up to 50ppm. In it I have a community consisting of 3 clown loach, 5 hatchet fish, 3 platies, 2 dwarf gouramis, 1 golden gourami, 2 honey gouramis, 5 neons, 4 rummy nose tetras, 5 glass catfish, 2 small Congo tetras, 4 black phantom tetras, 1 small angel fish, 3 balloon mollies 3 kuhli loach. The gourami's are 3 males in total, to the 2 females and the female dwarf is being hassled so I thought I'd get another dwarf female to take the pressure off. Similar situation with the platies - 2 males to 1 female, so I thought about another female. However I know the 1' - 1 gal guidelines and wonder whether I might be pushing my fishload? 30% Water change is done at least once a week, usually twice. Any help anyone?

You are already pushing the load for that tank beyond the limit that I would recommend. But you have a situation that needs to be taken care of. Either get another female or get rid of one of the males or the other female. I don't know for sure that another female will fix the problem, but it is worth a shot. The worst that will happen is that it doesn't work, then you will just need to take it and maybe the other female back to the lfs.

The bad news? No more fish (in THAT tank) and you're really pushing it as it is IMHO.

The good news? Start another tank!

OK, will get a couple of small tanks as soon as I can find the right size. Also, I have a spare fluval 3+ filter that isn't doing anything at the moment. will it help if I put that in the tank also? (Also would help with getting the other tank cycled when I find it too wouldn't it?)

Hi Cinder...
I agree that your tank is probably at maximum. Could be the reason your nitrates are high. Frequent w/c's like you are doing will keep them in check tho.
As far as the gourami's...I have found it best to have at least 2-3 females for ONE male. I no longer keep gourami's...but in the past..the aggression eased up this way. HTH.
