Difference of a betta and betta splenden

Is there a difference between a regular betta and a splenden or is it just the name?

okay the normal betta looks kinda like some types of gourami's with short non colorful fins and mostly only found in the wild. betta splenden are the ones you find in stores that are the nice looking ones (like the one in your icon and mine)but people just call them bettas for short. sometimes betta splenden do have short fins and can look like there wild ancesters but there still colorful and called plakats.
