we have just started to collect discus and two have died in the last week.
We have a canister filter and we have a couple plants and a big piece of wood for them to hide.
The tank is about a 30 gallon or so.
We were just wondering if anyone had any ideas as to what might have killed the fish.

Also, does anyone know what the exact food is to give the discus? We have been giving them bloodworms to eat.

Please advise

Thanks

Christine

Did you properly cycle your tank. That is the number one issue with new tanks. I made the mistake my self when I started. You can do a search on this site and find lots of info on cycling your tank. Also, john will probably be along before too long and I bet he has the tank cycling post memorized, and he presents it in a much clearer way than i could hope to.

Welcome to our forum.

If you're new to the hobby, raising Discus is about the most challenging thing you can do. In fact, many experienced aquarists avoid them because they're expensive, demanding and delicate. Achintya has been very successful raising Discus, but as he said, they require a high quality environment. In addition, they seem to do better in larger groups. A 30 gallon tank is probably the minimum size for two adults; a larger group requires a very large aquarium. That said, a Discus aquarium can be quite beautiful and very much admired by other aquarists.

A search button is at the top of the page and will lead to some information about the nitrogen cycle. It's very important to cycle a new aquarium, because few species of fish can live in an uncycled tank. If you have more questions, just ask.

Once your aquarium keeping skills are developed, Discus keeping can be very rewarding.
