Hi everyone,
As you know I have 5 tanks with angels. I have always wanted a few discus and Megham, I see that you just purchased some. They are just beautiful. My largest tank is a 29 gallon and I change about one third of the water twice a week. My questions are is a 29 gallon too small for a few discus it would just be the discus and a few BN plecos and would the water changes that I am used to doing now be enough for discus?
Thanks for any information,
Sue

I'm not a discus pro but I think that a 29 would be to small. I would recomnd a 55 but thats just me!! I also know that they are really picky about ph. I think they need like 8.2 but please dont quote me and that one! ive never had discus personally but I have been thinking about them too!!

Hi Kempy and thank you! Yes a 29 gallon is too small. Discus need at least ten gallons per fish and should not be kept in groups less than five. They are social and need to disperse aggression amongst each other. I would recommend at least a 55 gallon. Water changes of 55% twice a week should be enough if you are not stocked to maximum capacity or overstocked. Domestic discus adapt pretty well to just about any ph, but wild discus do need more specialized treatment. They also need the water to be a little warmer than angelfish at about 86 degrees Fahrenheit rather than 82 degrees. Also, they should never get cold. Two heaters is a good idea. Also, carbon filtration should not be used since discus need the minerals in the water that the carbon removes. They also have higher metabolism due to the higher temperature and when young should be fed at least three times a day. I hope this helps some. Let me know if I can help with anything else. Also, simply discus is a great place to get discus info. There are many people there who debate over what to feed and how much water changes, and even to have bare bottom or planted discus tanks. It is all very interesting.

Wow!!!
Taking the Discus Plunge!!!
Can we get pictures????
This is another fish I'd love to try, but I can't keep up with the water changes now, it wouldn't be fair to them...
So I just want to see pictures of yours!!! LOL!!!
