Not really. The way bettas are sold leads people to believe they can be kept in that small container and given a few pellets and be fine. It makes them a bit of an impulse buy and I think many of them meet their maker due to the inexperience of a well meaning newbie. If a beginner does their research first then I think they can be fine. They are a pretty tough little fish, but require proper care to thrive. Mine do much better in a heated and filtered tank than they ever do in a small container. Even if I give them 5 times as much space as the store cups.

i agree with megham 100% and A LOT of people tend to buy more then one at a time and think they can be put together and they both end up killing eachother

I love bettas. They are amazing to watch. If you do decide to get one, please don't keep it in a small container. It is cruel, not matter what the high school pet store kid tells you. I like them because, from my past experience, you can make them a centerpiece of your community aquarium (as long as there are acceptable tank mates, ie, no fish with longer, flowing fins that resemble a betta in any way!). I've had 1 male betta with mollies, neon tetras, etc and loved to watch. All of this was in a 29 Gallon tank, but if you just want 1 Betta, I'd steer clear from the betta section of the store and head for the smaller starter tanks and put them in a heated and filtered tank. Its always worked for me!
