Aquarium lights are rated by wattage and light spectrum. Strictly based on wattage, the U-shaped lights seem to be better. I've read that freshwater plants need light in the blue spectrum plus the daylight spectrum, whatever frequency that is. The idea is to simulate the light near the equator, because most aquarium plants originate in tropical zones. Watts per gallon, light spectrum and carbon dioxide supplementation are important if you plan to keep some lush, exotic plants. The latest thing on the market is LED based systems that can be precisely tuned. It's all expensive but also rewarding to good aquascapers. Some of the more common and less expensive plants do OK with a single tube T5.
My direct experience is only with the more common plants. Maybe one of our members can offer better advice.
