I have a 1 gallon mini fish tank with a Hawkeye 201 filter pump. I don't think it's working properly....I'm not supposed to have to clean the water all the time, right? How is it supposed to work? The water has to go through the tubing, am I correct. I told you...dumb fish owner!

goldfish is a huge waste producer..since you have just 1 gallon tank the best option is to keep a betta.anyway you should be very carefull about o maintain this small tank..though you have filter but clean it out every 3 days..

a betta can live well in such a small tank, though it needs atleast 5 gallon tank.but since gold fish is a hugw waste produdcer so you should be very carefull about the wastes,it can cause high Nh3 and nitrit.which can be very dangerous for your aquaium. but betta is not such a waste producer like gold fish..

What he is trying to say is that goldfish make a lot of waist, which pollutes the tank water very quickly, which can be toxic to the fish.

Betta do not produce as much waist as a goldfish, therefore they do not pollute the water. That said, they still need maintenance.

Honestly, such a small tank is going to require more effort and maintenance then a larger tank. Goldfish are supposed to have 10 gallons each if you want him to live a happy, healthy, long life.

Hey, I have the same aquarium as you! I currently have a betta in it and as jesskozzy said, goldfish need much more space. I used the 1 gallon temporarily to house two goldfish but then released them into our pond in my backyard. They seem much happier. You can also keep a paradise fish. I haven't had experience with these but I read in other posts that they are like bettas but prefer colder water.

Oh yeah and also welcome to our forum and happy fish keeping!
