I bought one of those cheap small filters with the padding and active carbon in it but now Its covering everything in my tank with blackness. any suggestions?

if you go for the biological filter you get all these actions that you described..moreovewr the cheapest filter is undergravel filter...

well who's idea was it to make a filter that just makes your tank look worse?!? gosh.

You probably should have rinsed the carbon off before you put it in. The black stuff is likely just carbon dust. Most filters will instruct you to rinse the carbon media before adding it for this reason.

Okay, thanks a lot... so I completely took all the filter media and active carbon out of the filter should I try it again just rinse it out this time? also, would an undergravel filter work with the sand I have?

From what I heard, sand compacts easily and will need frequent disturbing to prevent it from being stuck in the underground filter.

the undergroun filters are great for tanks with more gravel, because with the sand it gets sucked in frequently and it ruins the filter
