The tank should be safe, provided you have kept up with maintenance chores. To make sure the new fish are not diseased, many people will put them in quarantine for about a month. As a minimum, you should be very selective when you buy fish. Make sure the species are all compatible, and check the fish store aquarium residents for things like clamped fins, white spots, dropsy, shimmies, etc. If one fish in the tank has a disease or parasite, they have all been exposed. In addition, some aquarium shops have all of their tanks on a common filter system. To reduce shock when you transfer the fish to their new aquarium, use the drip acclimation method. Sorry if that sounds too much like instructions. Good luck and keep us updated.

Looks like a good place to bring this up...

Now I had an empty tank to start with, but I bought 10 female and 5 male fancy guppies at the big Petco sale last week. This is the first day that I haven't lost one...

So I'm down to 11.

BLAH! The irritating thing is that they all look fine and then there's just one dead...

Whatever... That's what I get with cheap fish... Let the strong survive!
