WELCOME to the forum!

The mag scrubber will help prevent scratches...

As far as removing scratches... I don't know of anything that would not be toxic to the fish...

Sorry...

I read about a guy that took the scratches out of his tank, but he had to drain it and it sounded like alot of work to get it done.

Some suggested something easier, turn the tank around so the scratches face the back. Unfortunately I can't do that because I have that textured background that's attached to the aquarium. So I'm stuck with my scratches (now i know why the tank was so cheap!).

Is the aquarium glass or acrylic? If it's glass, you can scrape off the old, external background and turn everything around. I believe some compounds are also available for taking minor scratches from the exterior of acrylic tanks. Just be sure to avoid solvents and soaps in the inside of the aquarium. If you become very involved with the hobby, you will almost certainly want more aquariums. The scratched tank could work just fine as a hospital tank or a spawning aquarium. If you make a double deck stand for aquariums, the flaws on the bottom one will not be as obvious.
