I can't help much with the fancy filter, because I just use the under gravel type. Other forum members have some experience with the other filters, so maybe they'll help. Another alternative is to visit one of the on line stores that sell the filters. Some of their product descriptions have setup instructions. In addition, they have bargains on aquarium heaters, which you will probably need for the tropical tank.

So far as setting up the aquarium, it's always a good idea to start simple. By that I mean you should not buy plant or fish species which are not compatible, and you should avoid the more expensive and demanding species until you get some experience. Neon tetras can be somewhat demanding and difficult to spawn. White cloud mountain minnows are a good alternative that will spawn in a community tank. A single species tank is also worth considering. Two things to definitely not do are over stocking and over feeding. A couple of to do things are make sure the aquarium is cycled before adding fish, and do partial water changes every week.

Just about everybody makes mistakes when they start keeping tropical fish, so please don't get discouraged while you're learning. And yes, we would love to see some pictures.
