Basically, you tell by how fat her tummy is, but you need something to compare it to. The fry sometimes get eaten, so you should have some floating plants to let the little guppies hide. Live bearing fish do not always drop all of their fry at one time. Guppies are not bad about eating fry, but if the aquarium has other fish you may never know the fry were born. Guppy fry are about 1/8 inch long.

she is really fat compared to the other guppies i have so i have moved her to a different tank all by herself and i do have floating plants in the tank.

I forgot to say welcome, so WELCOME TO OUR FORUM!

The stress of moving the female could make her drop some of her fry, but it could also be a shock to her immune system. Now is a good time to just wait and observe. If she's really big, she could have dropsy. Look at her from the top, and make sure her scales do not stand out like a pine cone. If the larger tank has only guppies and plenty of floating plants, the fry should be safe and there will be no future need to move gravid females. Good luck, and keep us posted.

Yes. She looks very pregnant. Floating plants and patience are all you need now. And be sure to avoid over feeding.

Her tummy will start to fill out toward the back, and the dark patch will grow before she gives birth. Don't feed her any more than she eats in a couple of minutes. The feeding routine I've used for years is a quality, staple flake food in the morning and some frozen food like brine shrimp in the evening. A healthy fish will act hungry all the time. When the fry are born, you can feed them flake food ground up between your thumb and index finger, plus frozen baby brine shrimp. The fry can eat three times a day, but it's a good idea to use a turkey baster to pick up any uneaten food. If they're in a large aquarium, you don't need to be so careful. The weekly partial water change will be fine.

The gestation period of a guppy is about 28 days, but females have the ability to carry viable sperm through several gestation periods. If she goes for 28 days without dropping fry, something could be wrong. Did you look at her from the top to make sure her scales are not sticking out? Have you done partial water changes on her aquarium? Is the tank temperature around 75 to 78 degrees? If everything checks out, all you can do is wait and accept all our wishes of good luck.

The secret is to give the fish a good environment and let nature do the rest while you just watch.
