Good Morning,
I have not been on here for a long time. How is everyone? I have a question about the hatchenspitterouter. How often do you add the brine shrimp eggs? If they take 18-24 hours to hatch, do you add a few times a day so the babies will have food through out the day? Or only once a day?
Thank you,
Kemppy

Welcome back!
Das hatchelfloffen is small, and it needs to be taken out and cleaned at least once a week. The really good shrimp eggs will sometimes hatch over night and will continue to hatch baby brine shrimp for about 24 hours. If you add one of the small scoops of shrimp eggs (full to overflowing) every other day or two, it should hatchunspit for almost a week, at which time it needs to be removed and thoroughly rinsed in hot water. To feed a large group of fry, you can run two hatchelfloffens at a time, alternating load and clean out days. One of the keys to making it work is to turn down the bubble machine until you can count two or three a second. Every now and then, the on-line aquarium shops have them on sale for ten or twelve bucks.
Somebody is for sure going to ask what we're talking about, so feel free to explain it.

I do have two of them going right now in different tanks. I worry though that they are not getting enough food. So I have been also giving some better than brine powder. Now what does everyone think about frozen baby brine shrimp? It seems that would be so much easier. The problem that I am having is during water changes. It is a real pain to change water with the hattenspitterouter in there. Do you have any hints or tips on that?

I exclusively use frozen baby brine shrimp.
I use the San Fransisco brand, and I buy a whole box of the flat packages.
Then I use tank water in a little cup and break off just what I need. It's really a good concentration I think. My fry love it!
I've also heard of people that will thaw a whole package out and keep the solution in the fridge.
You'll have to wait for John on hatchenflatchen info... LOL!
Good Luck!

One very good thing about the hatchelfloffen is no waste. All them dumb little shrimpees get aet. On the other hand, it's hard to tell the nutritional difference between hatchlings and freezlings. Well, little angelfish are attracted to the movement.

Just put your thumb over the suicide chute, have a long bubbler hose, and put the hatchelfloffen in a bucket. I dribbled saltwater before discovering the long air hose. Well, i still dribble, but der hatchelflaffen is easy to clean and requires very little salt or shrimp. You still need to tell everybody what a hatchelflaffenspittunshrimpum is. Good luck.

so if I understand right the hatchenspitterouter is running when you take it out and you put it in a bucket of water at the right water level and then put it back in the tank still running. I do clean mine out often but with fry they seem to need more water changes and if I restart it every time I do a water change they would never get brine. So do I have it right? Oh and my thumb is not large enough to cover the suicide chute LOLOL I will have to use something else.

If you think about it, frozen baby brine shrimp should have about the same nutritional value as live ones that were just hatched. The freezing probably does not remove any food value. On the other hand, the movement of the live shrimp attracts the fry and helps them learn how and what to eat. I usually supplement the hatchelfluff output with frozen brine shrimp.

To answer your question, I just put the hatchelfluffer in an empty bucket, then clean it. Usually, I move the parents and leave the fry in the spawning tank, which is either a 25 tall or a 37 tall. Because the aquarium is fairly good sized, I do partial water changes just once a week. Of course if you want lots of angelfish to sell, raising fry becomes a little more complicated. To me it's just a hobby, and the Phoenix market for tank raised angelfish is poor.

I think, maybe what she's trying to say John, is can you remove the Hatchenflatchen and put it in a bucket long enough to siphon the waste out of the bottom of the tank, then put the hatchenflatchen back in and it will continue to work?
I might be wrong...

Oh thank you so much Angela that is exactly what I was trying to say! My angels are turning out to be parent raisers. And the fry are only 9 days free swimming, so I like to do a small water change each day. It really seems to help. So if I take it out and clean it each day, there would never be brine shrimp. I have tried sliding it down the glass to keep up with the water loss, but you really have to have coordination to siphon with one hand, slide with the other, and still watch that you are not sucking up the babies LOLOL

I never thought about it like that. Let's see what John has to say about this one.
I just use the frozen bbs, but I would assume that John's right about the movement making them want to eat them more.
I was raising baby brine shrimp in the "black boxes" but I had 3 going and couldn't keep up.
Instead of purchasing the hatchenflatchen, I just started using the frozen.
Hopefully John will pop in later!

I am really considering going with the frozen brine shrimp. The only thing stopping me is that I can't buy it anywhere close to me, and the shipping is 24.99. I just hate to pay that high shipping. But I guess if I order alot at one time, it would be worth the lack of stress in doing water changes LOL

Is there any way you can get one of your local fish stores to get it in for you?
I pay like $35.00 for a whole box from my Local Fish Store...

well seeing as I live in the middle of nowhere my closest local fish store is 90 miles round trip. That is why when I do go and sell my angelfish juvies, I make it a shopping and out to lunch day also. LOL

If you could find a cap for the output side of the fluffenhousen, it may go into a bucket and not lose any water. However, if you have another aquarium close, even a small one, you could plug the output with the palm of your hand and transfer the whole business to the other tank. That's where the long air hose comes in handy. Sorry I didn't understand the question at first; my wife says I'm slow on the uptake. However, she also recognises my world class talent as a nap taker.
PS: If you have several aquariums and a freezer, the 25 dollar shipping isn't so bad for large orders. Although supporting local aquarium shops is a good idea, it's hard to ignore the prices offered on the net.

Well I am lucky enough to have Foster and Smith only 90 miles from me (180 round trip). So every now and then I do get down there. I do order alot from them as it does not take much time to arrive. But with frozen items I can see why they have to charge alot. I could just take a day and drive down, hit Menards (closest to me) and have lunch at the Chinese place. Now with the price of gas and shopping at Menards and eating out,,,, I guess that shipping price is really pretty cheap! I guess I just had to put it into perspective. Will post pics of the snow in just a few minutes. Just got done shoveling.

Sure and after all of that I just realized I put these in the wrong thread. Sorry! And how do you post more than one picture at a time, or do you have to do reply topic for each picture?

Wow. The snow is beautiful, but it looks awfully cold. Our admin can answer the picture question, but i think there is a limit to the number of gigglebytes that will fit into any one posting. If you have lots of gigglebytes and even terriblebytes, you can always put them on a Photobucket account and post the link here.

Skiing is not for old geezers with arthritis and no tolerance for the cold. .... Unless it's a cold beer on a warm day. Living in a remote location must limit the market for used aquariums, but a summer trip to the big city could slake some of the old MTS thirst.
At least you're close to the doctors' aquarium shop. Do you farm, Mother Earth News style, or do you just like the country atmosphere? Years ago, the idea of trading the aerospace business for country living was very tempting. Now the convenience of urban living trumps everything.
