you may contact with some reputed LFS owners of kolkata.

Dear Inihos,

Its legal to keep most of the Turtles in India in captivity(at home).Yeah If you want to keep Turtles,I would have to say it calls for bigger spaces every now & then,as they <email> most of their lives in water, thus it calls for larger aquariums every now & then with fewer fishes. They grow quite quickly.....finally they land up in your bathroom in tubs.I am not trying to put you off friend , but it is a difficult proposition as you go forward.I would rather suggest Tortoises, but only a few species are legally permitted in India.

you need to provide a basking area for the turtles.i think you cannot keep turtles in normal tanks, you need to have a tank which has a partition for water and a basking area.people use UV lights for the turtles to bask.dont keep fishes along with turtles as they will become a source of food for the turtles.commercially available turtle foods are available in the markets.achintya is right only red eared slider(RES) turtles are allowed to keep beacuse they are not native species.they originate in the south american waters.only the native species are illegal to keep in India.in kolkata you can get native turtles from galiff st market and some other pet stores but for RES turtle you have to try it from the reputed sellers.

shikha fr ur info only wild caught indian turtle are not allowed .. RES originates from south America and are largely breed all over the world for keeping as pet ... the ones which u get in India are either imported frm Singapore or breed in Farms locally...
