Carbon dioxide injection will encourage plant growth but can have an effect on aquarium chemistry. Fermentation systems generally operate continuously until the yeast and sugar solution is done producing alcohol. When the lights are out, live plants make carbon dioxide. A fermentation system adds more carbon dioxide, which could make it difficult for the fish to absorb oxygen while causing pH to fluctuate. The more costly systems use a pressurised carbon dioxide cylinder attached to appropriate valves and timers. Not all plants need CO2 supplementation. In many cases, clay based substrate additives and/or liquid fertilisers are sufficient.
