Maybe it's not so much the thermometer but the rubber suction cup that holds it inside the aquarium for a few weeks or months. When the suction cup fails, the durn thermometer bounces all over the aquarium, and you can't find it until it gets in your way during a partial water change. The rubber dufus usually winds up on the substrate looking like some defunct, wrinkled aquarium monster.

A possible way to solve this terrible, world shaking problem is to get one of those fancy electronic digital thermometers. Actually, the digits aren't all that fancy, but they give reasonably accurate readings of water temperature at various levels. If you have lots of aquariums, the digital thing is fairly portable, and one of those inexpensive, stick on the outside thermometers will give the careful aquarists a general idea about water temp numbers. They are available by the box full.

A magnetic heater clip sounds like a really good idea...

They just need to include thermometers in their magnetizing... LOL... Or do you think that would mess with the mercury? A magnetic thermometer that doesn't read out right wouldn't be much good... LOL...

The magnetic holders sound like a good idea. Mercury probably would not respond to magnetic flux, and thermometers may not even use mercury any more. It's a dangerous metal.
