Sexing the common plec or any pleco (appart from the bristle nose) is a plain nightmare. You are right to say that sexing these fish has something to do with the width (and the fatness), also the males are said to be smaller over all and they develope bigger barbells than the females. All this can only be done when they are adult fish and when you have a tank with many fish that are side by side. Even when you have a lot of plecos together there is no guarantee that you'll be sucessful in sexing them.

Once you have sexed them then breeding them is complex too. 1stly the males can be very territorial and breeding in aquariums can be difficult for this reason. They stake out a section of muddy rive/dam bank to build a burrow in, they then lay their eggs in this burrow and guard ift fiercly. This is not usually done in a tank, but rather very large dams in the tropics. Under these circumstances sexing them is not important as breeders simply put a number of fish in, guaranteeing several pairs per dam.

I have heard of a method for breeding them, but it rquires a big tank and lots of mess/mud.

How big is your tank?

That might be big enough!!

OK! I've been told from a good source that if you stack blocks of clay (the stuff from a pottery store..must be just clay and have no chemical additives) very tightly at one end of your tank, this can imitate a river bank. Make sure the clay is atleast as deep as the fish is long. So if you have 12" plecos you'll end up with a 4' tank.

Then place a wall of straw a few inches thick where the clay ends.( The straw needs to be thatched together into a sheet somehow??).

Then place a very large amount of drift wood in the tank. Place the wood so it holds the straw firmly against the clay and it should also create lots of hidding places for the fish the whole tank over.

Put a pair of plecos (or 3 or 4) into the tank and once they have paired off the male will eat through the straw, burrow into the clay and the breeding will commence.

I'm not sure what size/age plecos sexually mature at, so I can't advise you on what size you should have them at!?!?

4-5 foot is a bit small for 3-4 plecos (depending on their size). I'm not too sure this is a wise thing for your tank. However if you have good enough filtration, a LOT of wood to stop territorial issues and you do regualr water changes, you might get away with it!?!?

Hope this is helpful, it all makes sense to me, but I've never tried it, nor actually seen it done.

That would be fun to try, but I wouldn't want to fill a nice big tank up with mud.

Did you snap any photos of the baby plecos?Do they get protected by both parents or does the female get super aggresive? I would love to see a pic of some baby plecos. Congrats. Regards, Mike Anthony.

Jamal, please stop posting on old threads as it clutters the forum and makes it hard to answer everybody's questions.

The date can be found in the top right corner of the post.

My pleccy has it too. I was told it was his willy!

"Sex: Sexual differences
Plecoscostomus fish are difficult to sex for all but the most experienced. A trained eye can compare a male and female, with a male's genital papilla being a small but thick stub protruding from its undercarriage. On the female it will be either recessed or lie flat on the body." - Animal World
