In a very simple sense, just don't feed it. Of course that's not the easiest thing to accomplish. Keeping the aquarium clean and not over feeding help, but the real objective is to maintain a fine balance between the aquarium's biological load and the good bacteria.

A small bowl or aquarium gets polluted very easily from even a little bit of uneaten food. The Betta can breathe air, but he also needs to take in oxygen through his gills. If his water is polluted with ammonia from accumulated wastes, it will burn his gills. An air stone can help, but a small volume of water needs much more careful maintenance that a large one. If you want to post some details about the size of your aquarium, filter system, plants, etc., we can help advise you about setup and maintenance procedures.

Aquarium shops have to sell things in order to stay in business, and fish keeping is often made to look too easy. Lots of newbies make mistakes and get discouraged, and none of us hobbyists want to see that. Fish keeping is a rewarding hobby, and it can be easy if you follow a few simple guidelines. I hope we can help.

How big is the tank? You can always use a cheap under gravel filter and a small air pump to keep things clean and oxygenate the water. Just be careful to not over crowd a small aquarium. I always tell people wanting more aquariums to check the yard sales for bargains and to consider building some of the aquarium equipment. When you "fixed" the aquarium, did you use aquarium sealer or at least silicone with no additives?

If it was made specifically for aquarium fish or even to hold food, it should have no toxins unless the repair put them there or unless the container originally held something harmful. A sponge filter would work in a small container, but it may be difficult to find locally. If you go to a ma and pa aquarium shop, they may have one or be willing to order it. Sponge filters are not expensive. Sometimes yard sales even have aquariums for free if they know you're interested in the hobby.

Get the largest aquarium you can afford, and keep it clean.
