how do u know when a black molly is about to give birth and how long is it pregnant for?
need help please!
welcome to the site, well first their bellies go from rounder to more squared off like a box shape. and she will not be as active as normal, as wel as those they will hide from other fish. and shes prego for about 3 weeks or alittle longer. hope this helps eel free to ask more
If you want to save some of the fry, add some bushy, floating plants.

also can i use play sand in my fish tank but i have a sucker fish dont know if its bad for it becouse it likes to suck on everything...
Clive i had molly fry a couple of weeks ago and they doing good. so i can only speak for what work for me.
leave her in the main tank untill she gives birth.
Molly fry are independant form the minute she drops so if you put her in a breeding tank she may eat the fry if ya not there to take her out.
If you let her give birth in the tank the fry will find places to hide thus avoiding being eaten.
when you notice fry in the tank as they will still their heads out of any hiding places from time to time catch them and keep them in a holding net for a couple of weeks before transfuring them to an empty but cycled tank. adding about 25% of the smaller tanks volume of water from the main tank.
If you do this every week it will help with returning to the larger tank when older but also helps with the transfure to the new tank.
not sure about the sand but i would not have thought so as they tend to suck and pick up stones from the tank which helps keep it clean.
Hope this helps
Sorry just adding to my ,last post the fry like to go to the top of the tak so long dence or floating plants give them a perfect hiding place you will secure far more of them this way without them being eaten i was still finding them 3 days after the first one so they can hide well.
best of luck:
when do you put the mollie in the breeding tank before she gives birth, what are some sighns,
and thanks for helping it helped me out little bit i now what to do after now just need to know what to do before thanks
i also have a ballon mollie and it usto sleep up side down but not eny more it stays at the top of the tank at al times.
my preg mollie was at the bottom of that tank this morning still fat and moveing. is that a sign that i should put the net across that tank...?
have you got plants in the tank that the fry can hide that go to the surface of the water if so just let her be.
When you see she is no longer fat look for the fry they will be in the plants fish them out with a net and put them in your breeding tank.
dont streess her out by moving and netting her there really is no need.
i have plantis in the tank but she hase not yet gaven beath she has about 5 to 10 more days when shoud, when do i put her in the breading tank
Instead of putting her in another tank, float a large raft of hornwort or water sprite in the main aquarium. This will protect the fry and avoid moving/stressing the female.
can i put my ballon molly and orange molly on the same side of the tank when they give birth or do i have to get to nets?
i have a 37 gal tank now im going to split tank in 3/4 with net mow. When do i put the net up my ballon fish is biger than mt orange molly now to i have 2 mollys preg haha...?
Thanks for all the help.

Fry are very delicate, and moving them creates lots of stress. That's why some of us prefer using bushy, floating plants as a shelter for the fry.
Normally, live bearing fry are born fully functional and receive no parental nurturing. If you just purchased the female molly, moving stress may have prompted premature delivery. In that case, the fry would still have some of their yolk sac.
When the fry are about a half inch long (1.2 cm), they are too large to be eaten by the parents, but they may still get harassed. Thus the bushy floating plants will still be useful.
Even without a male present, the female molly can drop up to three batches of fry. Here are some more details:
thank u sir for replying all my fry a healthy they dont carry any sac the are already 1 cm each i have left the female fish back with other fishes and whe can she become preg again how many days it takes to give birth (Thanks for the last reply it helped me a lot)
Female live bearing fish usually stay in a family way so long as they are healthy. They drop fry about once every 28 days, which happens to coincide with lunar cycles.
JohnArthur, do you by chance know if floating fake plants would be a problem for an African Dwarf Frog? We were surprised to find some platy fry in our aquarium. I have a floating "baby hide" that I bought awhile back. I'm concerned the froggy might get trapped under it coming up for air.
Also, how long can a Molly be pregnant? Ours has been quite large for over a month.
Dude mollies take too much time to give birth.may be abt 2 to 3 months.when her tummy looks like a square box, keep her in another tank with too many water plants and stones, cause fry can hide there.and dont use floating plants 4 ur tank.it will create pollution.
but what if you put her in to soon im afraid shes gonna die !
