You wont believe this!! My big sister has a 5ft 2ft 2ft tank with 8 very large silver sharks, loads of clown loach, sucking loach, loads of cories, 2 very large royal plecos, loads and loads of different sized L number plecos, 5 female BN (only 1 big one) and one small male BN. One day, i was looking at the tank and the fish (as you do) and you will never guess what i saw, the male BN sitting on around 150 eggs inside the bogwood!!!!! The male is only around 2-3 ins, I didnt know they could breed at that size!!! Now they have all hatched and mum and dad are doing a VERY good job looking after them!! Also, some of the cories in there spawned too. One day we came in and the electric had gone off and the tank was on 19 degrees!! we found corys eggs and one pleco egg. We were soo excited as there is lots of flash plecos etc in there, so we thought it could have been one of them, but now we realise that it is most probably just a BN egg that has got loose. Has anyone else had any strange happenings like this???

It's usually very difficult to raise fry in a community tank, so your sister should not get too optimistic unless she can move them pretty soon. Funny how some fish will spawn if given the right aquatic environment and left to their own devices.

No but you see john, there is one gap in the bogwood, and you have to go that way or you cant get out. mum and dad are both sitting in the way, so none of the fry can get out, how clever!! and also, i find this so sweet, when its feeding time, mum and dad take it in turns to come out, get food and take it back to the babies!! Its so sweet!! They're such good parents, and their first time too!!!

You know, something like this might be a good idea for your BN plecos. Maybe you could get them to breed in a piece of bogwood?
Maybe they just don't like the castle?
Just a thought.

What kind of bog wood already has a hollowed out space? Do you think a clay pot would work just as well?

I have clay pots... like the orangey... terra cotta type, whole and cut in half.
And I have Coconut shells cut in half, with a hole cut in them...
My BN have decided on the coconut shells.
They rarely even go in the clay pots... I'm thinking about taking them out...
I know that the plecos need/like wood. I currently don't have any in the tanks. I'd like to get some, but everyone wants an arm and a leg for it...
LOL!

Once in a while, PETCO has a good deal on Malaysian driftwood if you order on line. I've also found it cheap on Ebay.

I have an apparent "pleco breeding cave" but not one have i seen either of them go in it!!! I think the plecos just breed where they like the look of!! Although my sister has a successful pair in one of the same breeding caves. . .
