I have 2 red jewel cichlid and the female layed her eggs on the side of a pyramid shaped decoration we have in the tank and after two days the male and the female removed the eggs(150) or so . But im not sure if the y put the eggs back in the pyramid or if they ate them or what happened. we have a divider in a 20 gallon tank so it's just the male and female and no other fish. my questions are did she eat the eggs or am i just anxious and the natural process has not had enough time? and is it safe to do a water change at this time? it has been 5 days since we noticed her laying the eggs on the side of the pyramis. Please help.

Observe your jewels, if the eggs have hatched they will be guarding the fry. If they are swimming all around as normal then they probably ate the eggs. Many fish will eat their first spawn or two before they get it right. Be patient and you will soon have plenty of fry.

Ok thanks for your response. I have another question if you don't mind.Is it ok to do a water change where the fry are?

Clean water is especially important to fry, so partial water changes should continue. Stay as far as possible away from the nest, and prepare to get attacked. Most Cichlids vigorously defend their eggs and fry, but when they're really upset they sometimes protect their spawn by eating it.

The Jewels hide there eggs away when the are about to hatch she will biould a nest in the sand or the corner of the tank. There she will placwe the eggs until the fry hatch,You also have to be careful that your filter hassnt sucked up the fry. Once the fry hatch leave them with there parents until mature. My 12 Jewel spawn every 3 weeks so dont worry the could spawn soon. You have to make sure that you have a male anda female. You can till the diffrence by the black dots.3 black dots its a female 1 blach dot its a male.
