Thanks for offering help. Just about everybody who keeps aquariums has thought about raising Discus, but they're not easy. What kind of basic advice would you offer someone interested in starting a Discus tank?

I recently aquired 51 fishtanks and with them came three 6inch discus. Two of them are blue and red the other I am not sure as I have not picked them up yet. I have been searching the net all day and am still not sure how to take care of them or even transport them. She kept them in a 55gal and I am planning to as well, but am not sure of water conditions, food etc...
Also she said they breed quite frequently and I am not sure how to take care of the fry: what to feed, when should they be moved...so if you could please shed some light as soon as possible...please help!

4.what is your filtering system?

Well I was forced to set up one of the 55gal two days ago so it is not cycled, and I brought them home yesterday along with a large golden angel. The ph and the amonia are slightly high so I am dealing with that, but wanted to know what they mean by soft water. All of my research tells me they like soft water, but they do not say how to achieve this.Does that mean no amonia or nitrite?
Also, the female looks to be loaded down with eggs, what should I do or not do for her? I have a breeding cone in there currently, but was unsure of what else to do...foods, temp etc...Please let me know!

not only for a discus aquarium but also for all aquarium the nitrite and ammonia level must be zero...soft water means the water you drink or use.use this water for your aquarium.but don't use distilled water because this type of water ill be free from any minarels.
how many discus you have at present in your aquarium?if you have only the breeding pair then it is fine but if not then keep the other discus fish to another aquarium..it's fine that you have a breeding cone, you may use pvc pipe..most of the time it's find that discus lay eggs on that pvc pipe...
as per feeding you may feed trhem twice or thrice per day but not feed them more because this can cause high nitrite and ammonia level in your aquarimm.temperature should be always 30 deg centigrade...
for more information check thhis link about how to take care breeding pair of discus..... http://discusfishcaresecrets.blogspot.com/2009/07/ secret-of-breeding-discus-in-your-own.html
hope you read this....
thank you..

Your info really helped...and the fish are doing fine! My Levels are down to normal and my temp is perfect. The problem is that there are two males and one female. Two have paired off, the two terquoise as best I can tell (trying to get the pics for you) and the other, larger male, red and blue seems to think he is her mate as well. They have been together in an empty aquarium with a large angel for years. The woman who gave them to me, said she always put a tank devider in when the pair spawned and then removed the male as soon as he fertalized the eggs...is this good?
I went to the link and it helped...thank you! Today I found a book called Discus Fish by: Giovanetti and Lucanus that really goes into detail on the discus (for those of you who like to read) so I think I am doing good, and hope you are around for emergencies
Thanks a bunch!

yes the girl whatever say abou the divider is essential for when they will spawn.generally we recommend that eitherkeep breeding pair of discus or keep 2 male or 3 female discus together.but since you have 2 male and 1 female so you should keep a divider while breeding...
thank you that my blogs help me...with in a few days i also updae some more blogs about discus fish...if you have any problem about discu fish then consult with me...i can help you out as far as i can...

O.k., so before I could seperate the other male from the breeding pair...she started laying the eggs and both males started to fertalize them. Is this normal for both males to do the job and should I remove them when they are done(put in the devider) also is it normal for the males to peck at the female when she goes near the eggs. They are being quite agressive towards her. She started laying at six o'clock so how long should I expect them to keep at it?

what!!!!!!!!!!!both 2 male discus spawned it???????it's an abnormal case.i never hear about this...you must use a divider toseparate those 2 male discus..but the question is which discus do you separate??the answer is simple...the discus which is less aggresive and give more time to their eggs keep this male discus along with female and separate the others...in the divider you will keep them not only for some hours but for some days..genarally you should keep them until the eggs move into juvenile discus....

I don't keep any Discus, but a guy who does told me that most spawns do not produce viable fry. Maybe he said that because he just imports them and does not try to raise fry. As a hobbyist, I think it would be great to raise some Discus fry.

O.k., so here is my problem now...
I seperated the more agressive male and left the female and the male who was taking more time with the eggs. Thats when the female started fighting with the other male and knocking the eggs off the cone...
None the less I had to take down the devider to save what I could of the eggs. I mannaged to save atleast 70 of them and immediately after taking down the devider the bigger male returned to blowing on the eggs. The female makes attempt after attempt to get to them, but they fight her off every time. I am thinking now that the woman may have been wrong...I either have two females and one male or the female she pointed out is not the female. I am trying to pull up some pics so you can maybe help me with this. On the off chance that she was right and the males are actually taking care of the eggs...why would they do this and is it normal?

jmjohn those discus are blue terquise discus..and you have 2 male and 1 female...form your picture i easily understand that the aggresive is more dominanat in your tank...the last picture which you called the smaller male fertilise thoe eggs not the aggresive one..but the feale prefer the aggresive one discus because he is more dominant than the smaller one..but you should separate the bigger and aggresive male..i hope within a few days those 2 male and female live together....

It's normal for both cichlid parents to care for their eggs and fry, although one of the partners can become very possessive. Your photographs make me want to try raising discus.

It has had me watching the tank for hours and it is wonderful. I have yet experienced a fish that spends so much time taking care of the eggs instead of eating them...I am so enjoying it. They are starting to hatch now and the large male is becomming more agressive so I am going to try and seperate him...he has done his job and now it is time for him to go!
One more question though...Is it normal for them to have different eye color if they are all terquoise? One has nearly blak, the other has gold with a black stripe and the other has red with a black stripe.

O.k., so my first batch of eggs was eaten...soooo sad!
However I am not too terribly sad because they are at this moment laying again!
Here's the weird thing...the one we thought was the female...was not! The one in the middle is actually a male and the one I called the small male(who was the one who paired off with the one we thought was the female)is actually the female! The one I called the male is the one who paired off with the female...would not have known this if I had not actually wittnessed it. I think I might have a problem with them eating the eggs again so if you have a suggestion other than raising the fry seperately of how to prevent this...it would be greatfully appreciated!:: Thanks again!!!

as i mentioned earlier the best way to fertilize those eggs is to separate the bredding pair in a separate aquarium...

They are already seperated and the eggs are definately fertalized now. I was just wondering how to keep the parents from eating the eggs like they did the first time.

i think this time the parents may not eat their eggs..hope for the best..generally the parents eat their eggs if they are frightened or hungry and if they quarrel with each other..i thnk since you separate the other aggresive male so they may not be frightened or quarrel..

You are very much right. They were frightened, and the one I thought was the female is alot happier now that he is in his own tank. The problem is that when I got him his belly was quite large and of course the woman had told me he was the female so I thought he had eggs...obviously not the case now that I know he is actually the male...so what could have caused him to come so bloated and how do I treat it? Was she maybe feeding him too much? Is it some kind of worms or something of the sort?

ya he had a large belly due to over feeding..it's not a disesse.i think you may feed them more.you may feed discus even 3 times per day but not large amount in quantity...
