I just added a few guppies to my 5 gal tank about 3 days ago and I'm worried the filter is to strong for them. They look like they're really fighting the current and last night one of them got stuck on the filter and died. Should I get a new filter or bigger tank? (The filter is for 5 to 10 gallons) My husband will only let me go up to a 10 gallon tank but I'm not sure if that would help with the current.

If the filter has no adjustment provisions, you can make it a bit safer by placing a sponge filter over the intake tube. You may also be able to reduce the turbulence by installing a large raft of bushy, floating plants.

Some aquarium filters can be powered by an air pump. Flow rate is easy to adjust in these filters by adding a few valves to the airline.

I should also point out that a five gallon aquarium has a very limited biological load capacity, and guppies are very prolific. You may, within a few months, have more guppies than the small aquarium can accommodate. Many aquarists keep only one male betta in a five or ten gallon tank and consider 20 gallons appropriate for a small group of guppies.

Recently, Petco was having a dollar a gallon sale on new aquariums. In addition, rummage sales and yard sales often sell used aquariums for a small fraction of their retail value new.

Good luck, and please keep us updated.

Well I got a different filter but I don't think it'll work. I am now down to two out of four fish and the other two look like they're going to die also. What am I doing wrong? I've kept my betta and mystery snail alive for months and these guppies are just dying away.

Well all my fish were dead by this evening. I took them back to where I got them along with a water sample. They tested it an came to the conclusion my water was to clean. I'm new at taking care of fish, I've only had gold fish growing up and a betta I've had with no problems with for the past 6 months. I had no idea water could be to clean. I got some bacteria supplements hopefully that will help and I'll go back for some hardier fish in a few days. Any suggestions?
