Interesting! I have tons of Malaysian trumpet snails and they really breed fast! I just did some research on them and apparently they are pretty good for the aquarium. I always thought they were destroying my plants, but I guess they are just eating the dead and dieing parts. I still need loaches to keep them under control though. I think they may also respond well to John's lettuce trap.

Here is another interesting website about snails:

According to the website, snail shells are mainly calcium carbonate, which occurs in hard water with a high pH. Things like driftwood and Indian almond leaves (catappa leaves) will lower pH and hardness and thereby give the snails thin shells. This seems to be more important with the larger snails.
