Nobody but a fish nut would get excited about this, but... Last year i got a half dozen of Gertrude's Rainbowfish and put then in their own 15 gallon tank that's about 30 percent choked with hornwort. Just a few minutes ago, I saw a couple of the world's smallest fry swimming at the top. No doubt there are better ways to do things, but this way is more fun.

I'm going to try my hand at breeding puffers! Tomorrow I am going to pick up some females to hang out with my males (Red-Eye puffers/C. irrubesco). Apparently they breed easily. So wish me luck!!
Maybe in a couple months I can surprise myself and say that I have some puffettes (keep in mind that I haven't ever really bred any fish, other than some livebearers last year which were quickly eaten after birth).

Sounds like a good idea. Please keep us posted. Puffers are really fascinating.

I've been puffer-crazed since the first one I got, now I have 16 Puffers, and planning on getting 4 more tomorrow!! (Not all the same species though).
They are very unique fish and I am really taken with them, I just wish I had more tanks so I could have more Puffers, although having said that, I'm buying 2 new tanks at the end of the month, hee hee!

Do they have yard sales across the pond? Out here in the colonies, yard sale aquariums are great bargains.

Nah, you do get the odd "car-boot sale" which is very similar to flea markets.
But my best friend is 'eBay' !! When I want or need something, it's onto eBay to see what I can find, and I've done rather well so far, I've gotten every one of my fish tanks that way, and alot of other things too.

GRATS JOHN!!!!
and GOOD LUCK SUZER!!!
That's really really awesome John... So... Questions...
1. No Mop???
2. Have you seen any other species of Rainbow fry? They're nearly microscopic, so I'm just wondering if yours are smaller than they are, since your bow is so tiny as an adult.
So the hornwort in that aquarium is great, because the babies can eat the microscopic munchies in the plants...
I'm so glad for you!!! I wondered how soon it would be... My preacox suprised me this way, as you know, and it's just really really awesome!!!
Oh! By the way... I've heard lots of interesting stories about rainbow fish... If you don't want bows in every tank, beware of moving your hornwort from that tank to another... LOL!!!
GRATS AGAIN!!!

The aquarium has a couple of spawning mops, but i think they put their eggs in the hornwort. I just saw one about the size of an angelfish fry, so they must have been here a while. And it looks like they're eating hornwort cooties. Now i'm not sure about doing the partial water change in the morning. With all the plants to keep the water clean, it may be better to not disturb them.

NO WATER CHANGES!!!
Don't do any water changes for about a month.
I know it goes against everything we preach... You can move the adults to a clean tank if you want to.
Leave the babies be, what kind of filteration do you have on this tank? Very little top of the water movement is great!
Grats Again!

Actually, I was a little short on money when i rescued the 15 gallon from a yard sale, so the filter is only one half of an uggiff. Of course, the biological load is small, so it may be better to do nothing than to do the wrong thing.

My bosemani are a couple of months old right now, and all they've ever had is an airstone.
I just syphon the bottom of the tank every couple of days and top off with aged water.

Thanks for your advice about the rainbow fish. I really hope to raise a few. If you have any more suggestions for a newbie bowhead, let's hear em.

The aquarium is so choked with hornwort that it's hard to see all the little rainbow fish. Today, I did a partial water change and moved some of the hornwort around. I saw two of the fry, both different sizes and both with quite a bit of growth. Who knows what's in all those weeds. So far they have been getting live baby brine shrimp (thank you mister hatchelflucffen), frozen baby brine shrimp, and a variety of flake foods. The adult males have sprouted longer fins. It's probably just a rainbow fish geezer thing.

That's too cool John! Look at the things that happen when I am out of town. If you ever get overrun with the little guys let me know. I may be willing to take some off your hands. Or maybe the discus will have other ideas.

It's also amazing what happens when I just leave things alone. You're on the rainbow adoption list.
