Hi all,

I saw some of these funny critters a few weeks ago and really want to know more bout keeping them. I have a big enough and secure enough tank for 2. But wondered if anyone heres kept or keeps them at all? If so Whats the best way to go with them?

Thanks Tony.

In Arizona, they call them water dogs and sell them in bait shops, but they're salamanders. Years ago, i had some in an angelfish tank and they did OK more or less. If you consult Google you can find out about their requirements. Probably, they will be different than the requirements of common aquarium fish. That doesn't mean you shouldn't keep them, just that they need an appropriate environment.

Thats one of the reasons im asking here googles just given me so much diffrent info that im not sure wether id be doing the best for them. I know they idealy need completly diffent enviroment from normal aquarium tanks and the eat live food mainly but thats as far as ive managed to work out.

When they were in my aquarium, I just fed them frozen brine shrimp, but that was probably not ideal. There are so many different subspecies that you need to do some research. I don't want to tell you the wrong thing, but other forum members may chime in (let's hope).

These will have a dedicated tank set up jut for them. I know they can regenerate limbs but id rather not put it to the test.

LOL, I know there is someone on another forum called the angelfish connection that keeps them. There is a post with pictures if you want to check it out. I think they are neat animals and quite pretty. We have some at the Wildlife World Zoo and Aquarium out here in Arizona.

One of the things about them is that if they are kept out of water, or too little water, they change over to salamanders, but you can keep them from doing that. I've also heard that they become more aggressive if they changeover. We were going to get 3 just a few weeks ago, but the girl had let them start to change and we wanted the totally aquatic ones.
I know that's not much help, sorry.

Here is a web site that may interest you. www.Buy-Axolotls.com

Looking over it very quickly, I noticed that they need cool water and will eat just about anything.

in india i saw the salamenders in the zoo.providing some special care and maintainance..Salamanders generally need a humid environment. However..., a completely dry area should be available to them at all times! It depends on the species of salamander whether an aquarium or a terrarium should be used. Many species of the genera Cynops, Pachytriton and Paramesotriton (often referred to as 'Asian fire-bellied salamanders' can be kept in an aquarium without problems. If in doubt, opt for an aquaterrarium. In such a container, the water basin contains a dry land area (such as a floating piece of cork bark).

Decorate the aquarium - or the water basin of the aquaterrarium - with hardy aquatic plants and leave the bottom bare or cover it with fine gravel or coarse aquarium sand.

then u can keep this salamenders.
