I was looking around at liveaquaria.com and noticed how drastically overpriced they are! At my local Petco, I can buy a ghost shrimp for $0.49 and on the site they have them for $1.09. I can get snails for $1.99 and they have them for $2.99. It's just ridiculous.

Shipping seems to be the biggest expense, and they probably factor in dead loss too. Although I've never bought live plants or fish from Drsfostersmith.com (liveaquaria), I've purchased frozen food and aquarium supplies from them, and price and service seem to be good. If you're looking to buy fish on line, Aquabid.com is a good place to start; many hobbyists as well as businesses advertise there, and you can find things that are not available in local shops. The big chain stores get all of their fish from wholesalers. There is nothing wrong with that, but sometimes the fish are not handled properly once they get to the store. In addition, they don't buy fish or plants from hobbyists. Live plants are cheaper to ship than fish, and Aquabid has some real bargains. I've even ordered plants from places in Malaysia. Of course there are also several good places state side.
