I recently just moved some of my tanks and I guess you can say it inspired me to write a blog about it.

Have you recently thought about moving your tank(s). Well trust me it is harder then just drain and lift. First you have to plan out where your going to move it to. When thinking about that you want to keep in mind windows, power outlets and vents, also making sure the floor in the area is fairly level (if its not perfectly level you can always add shims under the stand to level the tank off better). Also what are you going to put it on, hopefully you already have a stand. If you want a new stand or maybe you have been trying to get away with a stand that is really just an old dresser or end table, now is the time to upgrade (to make your own stand check previosly made posts, John has a really good one out there that is maybe a month old for a sturdy and relativly simple to make stand). Now the tank needs to be completly empty when you move it, that also means that if you have fish in it you need to find a temparary home for them. Any added weight to the tank when its lifted will stress out the seams and make it leak when you refill the tank. If you do have fish you want to have several buckets handy to try and preserve as much of the existing water otherwise when you refill the tank you’ll be starting over. You obsiously need to get the stand inplace before you can move the tank. Then make sure the tank is sitting level. After that you basicly just need to resetup the tank with the water, decor and fish. Before you add the fish make sure all you heaters and pums are still working! When I moved my 3 tanks I just kinda went at it and it ended up alot loger then I wanted it to. Its an easy enouph idea but it does take some thought to do it right. Luckily I got mine moved without an issue.

Good advice. Don’t make me tell you about moving several aquariums from Dallas to Phoenix in a U Haul trailer in the winter of 1965.

An experience it was, but not a wise one.

I moved my tank once between towns, and lost several fish on the process… :-| The problem was that I could not see all the fish because of the “dust” blown up from the gravel, and at the bottom of my tank I have a glued decoration, in which the fish hide in… :-( Are all your fish safe?

yea they all made the journey!

It’s definately a sucker to move tanks… I move them all over… Setting them up, and that not working… so I’ll break them down, and move them somewhere else… Blah… the thought of it just tires me out!

I just bought a new 125 six foot aquarium and transfered the contents of my 4 foot 120. Needless to say, I am heading the chiropractor tomorrow!

That’s where us old guys have the advantage. We’re so broken down and arthritic that the young guys want to help, so we let them.

I need some young guys tomorrow… I’m going to attempt resealing the 90… Been a long time coming…

Good luck on that one. When I resealed a 29, my fingers hurt for two weeks.
