I turned on the light this morning to find my male bn pleco fanning and guarding a tiny amount of eggs in his driftwood cave. When I got home I looked in the cave and they were gone. Then I look at the bottom of the tank and saw them scattered about. I guess he wasn't sure what to do with them just yet. I siphoned them into a net where I cleaned most of the snails and debris off of them. Once clean I placed them in a pickle jar with an air stone. It is floating in the original tank right now. There appears to be about thirty-fifty of them. They are quite large and none have turned white yet. I will keep my fingers crossed that they will hatch in 4-7 days. I have never raised these before and am excited that my initial investment in these guys may pay off.

Thanks, unfortunately they did not make it. They looked like they were developing, but I think something got to them. Maybe it was fungus from unfertilized eggs. It was weird though because they did not outright turn white like angelfish eggs do. They just got lighter in color and started falling apart. Hopefully they will spawn again and the male will take care of them this time. I think it is possible he knew something I did not and kicked them out of his cave for a reason. John, if I ever am able to successfully breed these guys you are welcome to some.

I'd add double filtration (if you have an extra canister ready) next time they spawn - just in case.
Thinking about it, I'd probably add it right away, so it's biologically ready on the next spawn.

Do you mean add another filter? How will this help? I do run an HOB filter on the tank they are in and do frequent water changes. Do you think there should be more water flow? I have a submersible power head I can put in there that does a pretty good job.

Being all young and everything, could it be that the male didn't live up to expectations?

Actually the male is a few years old and quite mature. I think it may just be due to inexperience. It was his first time after all. The female is actually the young one. She may be a little over a year. Perhaps her eggs are not up to par yet?

Wow! It must be something to be "an old manure guy". Perhaps you meant mature? LOL .
