My discus(4inches plus) have turned black due to stress.& lie on one side of the tank in a cluster. They eat but very less. In case of one female blue diamond which is effected, her skin seems to be peeling. In Diwali season as there is a lot of noise & vibration due to bursting of crackers in India,Discus seem to encounterthe above problem.I have 2 Juvinile Super red melons in this aquarium, these guys are not effected, they move & eat normally.I do siffoning on daily basis around 40% daily, this discus .This tank is bare with only driftwoods with good enough filteration & a high grade thermostat.

I have lost one of my Blue Turqoise yesterday, others are on recovery path,I am worried about my snakeskin, friends. The Discus effected are in totallity 6.Friends please suggest measures to ease their stress & for their faster recovery.

so sad news for your loose.
separate your effected discus into a hospital tank.keep the thermostat ON at 30 degree Celsius for 24*7. according to the dimension of your hospital tank you can give metrogyl 400 dose.don't feed them at least 3 days.after 3 days watch their movement.if your discus come towards you them feed their most likely food.watch 3-4 days more after that.if your discus eat normally then after a week you can introduce them into your show tank.

Achintya,
Pl dnt mind. If discis fish is stressed then Metro dont work. Metro treatment is for some stomac problems and some times for some worms. Whats the condition now? I hv some idea.

I agree Souvik uncle, metrgill is not for stress or that kind of serious problem. I think its infection, may be svk kaku has a better idea. But one thing, do minm 50% water change daily it'll do a lot.

Ya Jahar u are right. Thank u Shaildevil. I dont know your tank size, anyway, at first do 80% water change with aged dechlorinated same temp water and use 1tsp of rock salt per 25gal of water. Next day 40% water change and add 40% salt. Do it for 4days. Please inform daily.

Hi Souvik,

I am through with 80% water change & then today have done 40 % water change. I have added salt as prescribed by you.The discus seem to be better .My Blue Diamond is still black in colour, but his blackness has reduced as to what it was earlier.

Souvik,I feel my discus are suffering from Plague.
All symptoms they have suggest the same... like they turned black, were lying in one corner in a huddle, used to breathe heavily. They had a kind of mucus formation on their skin.

I kind of backtracked the series of events .... this is what it was like I hade introduced 2 Super red melons from a trusted source in this tank of mine, from my friend who is a Discus breeder. The problem was his discus ,quite a few of his breeding pairs & other discus were effected by plague. The discus I purchased were fries of imported parents coming form an tank OF his which was not infected.Due to common water pipes.I feel his entire water tank got infected, thus the Super melons I introduced were carrying this disease, but were not infected themselves(were passive carriers of the bacteria).

The super red melons in this discus tank of mine are still not effected, all the rest of my discus were severely effected being fairly big they suffered more.I feel the infection spreads through healthy fish(carriers) more often than sick looking fish.

I feel with the kind of treatment you have suggested which is showing some results, thanks for that, should i treat them with Chloramphenicol/ Tetracycline/ Oxytetracycline or Gentomycin & use potassium permanganate to reduce the bacterial effect.I feel reducing the PH to 6 -6.5 should also help, kindly confirm friend.

Regards,

DONT USE PERMANGANATE . . . ITS VERY DIFFICULT TO USE IN CORRECT DOSAGE. I think its safe to use Oxytetracycline side by side. Its good to hear that they r improving.

Hi Sd,
Sorry for late. I was very busy ysterday wth my wrk. anyway dnt worry, as your discus respond well, they will be fine. Johor is correct, according to me
1. raise tank temp to 31degrees
2. change 80% water
3. put 3tsp non iodised salt
4. withdraw sponge filter
5. use at least 2 air stone
6. use 7 Oxytetracycline 500mg
2nd day change 80% water, salt and med same dose
3rd day change 80% water, use 80% of salt and med
4th day change 60% water use 60% of salt and med
DO NOT FEED THEM
Please let me know afte 3rd day
Hope for the best

Hi Souvik,Achintya & Jahar,

My discus have finally recovered. It was the infection from my super red melons, inspite of me quarantining these guys ,before introducing them in my discus tank, still the damage was done,I lost 2 out of my eight existing discus(all were 4-5 inches, marie Buscuit size),rest all are now fine.

Now the composition is eight again 6 earlier ones & 2 super red melons(Juvenile).

Thanks friends.
